2008

Me 14:24, 26 August 2008 (EDT)

Nothin' like walking in day in, day out and having next to nil for email. I'm not saying I want screaming customers. I'm not saying I want exec's asking for asinine data retrievals. I'm just saying that an empty "Unread" folder kinda makes ya feel like a non-entity in the company. That's all.

No idea why I didn't post yesterday. It was one hell of a weekend, and I was busybusybusy.

Friday night was the usual Karazhan run. Well, maybe not so usual in that rather than healing on my paladin, I was asked last Tuesday to tank. Me? Tank? Ha! You're not serious. Nope. The raid leader's name is Avallach, not Shirley, and he was serious.

I spent the better part of my in-game time last week farming up as much tanking gear that I could. Researching what enchants I could put on my paltry tanking gear. Sure, I'd tanked Shadow Labs before, but off-tanking in Kara is a whole different ball game. In the end, I made a made power run into Heroic Mechanar with some guildies to get one last badge. The chest plate I needed was 100 badges...and I had 99. We made it there in plenty of time for me to get the badge, get the piece, quick bio, get the kid's toothbrushes ready (Wifey and the kids were at [MIL]] and FIL's), refill my glass of Dew (don't judge...it was raid night!), and hope back in for the raid group.

Had. A. Blast. No respec, not up to "established minimums" for tanking, and yet we blasted through at our usual pace (through Aran, including Maiden, and went back to kill Illhoof). I elected that night to run purely on Dew and not 5HE, so by normal quit-time (1am my time), I was tapped. They went down to try and farm up this pattern off some elites, and I passed. Rather, passed out. Big day ahead.

Saturdays. A day for sleeping in. Wandering around in the morning in your PJs with not a care in the world.

Yeah right. Not with the day I had ahead.

Up at 6am to get going. Kids were asleep, Wifey looked cute with a little bit of sleepy eyes, and since both of us were awake...WTH?  ;) Then, into the shower and dressed. Time to wear the uniform I hadn't worn all summer: Captain Den Leader.

Popcorn Bootcamp. OK, it wasn't that hardcore, but it was a two hour meeting, at 9am on a Saturday, 45 minutes drive north from home. On top of that, Wifey was doing a garage sale, so I almost had to have the kids with me. I was traveling there with the Uber Popcorn Kernel from our new Cubmaster's old pack. His wife volunteered to watch the kids so we could talk. (This was a good thing as there wasn't hardly any room at the meeting room.)

So, in order to make the meeting and give the kids time to get acclimated to their house, I had to get to his place at 7:45. Again. On Saturday morning. I don't even get my butt moving that fast on a WEEKDAY, but somehow I made it. They have three dogs, two to three cats, and two horned lizards (in a cage of course). The dogs are big golden retrievers, but thankfully for TheBoy, they stayed outside mostly (he's skittish of dogs still). TV went on, they sat down, and it was time for us to leave. Children of the Tube ignored my existence. Strange house and I didn't even get a wave goodbye from the door.

I took this back way I was SURE was faster, but it turns out the area has built up so much, that it's no longer the speedy trip I recall. Thankfully it was probably spot-on for the main artery that normal people would have taken. We made it there with 5-10 minutes to spare.

The conversation on the way was interesting. Turns out he worked for K-Line several years ago, and knew several people from ThePit. I was a bit sad that the conversation turned to Pit-Related topics at the very least, as I'd hoped to talk about popcorn and how the hell I'm doing all of this instead. Oh well.

The meeting was very cool. He said he was bored, but he's been the Kernel for a couple years now and knows all this stuff. I disagreed with several of their points, saying things like, "That's not how it works," only to have the presenter say, "This changes from how we'd done it in years past, and we hope it'll be an improvement." The guy has a lot of knowledge, but he does seem to be a bit full of himself and "how things are done" because "that's the way he does them". I found myself weighing much of what he said very cautiously.

The meeting concluded, I grab a ton of applications and sample copies of Boys' Life for the upcoming recruiting meeting at the elementary school. Got a yard sign or three as well. We packed it up and headed back to his house.

Again though, he kept veering off onto tangents other than popcorn. The whole point was for me to glean knowledge from him. I heard more about how sucky it was to work for his boss at K-Line than I did get more info on popcorn selling. I'll just have to wing it and/or talk to the guy who did the presentation.

We zip back to his house and he's chatty. The kids are finishing eating, and are slow to move. We need to get going. Why the sense of urgency you ask? Why, because the insanity of the day included not only the popcorn meeting but also a den hike at a park 10-15 minutes away. I had rescheduled it from the previous weekend before I had heard that the guy wanted to go to this particular meeting.

We barrel over from the house at like 10 minutes after noon.

...and now the blog entry I have been working on all day is put on hold. More pressing matters.

This day has officially sucked.

Hopefully Scouts tonight goes better.

Here's a bit of emo-humor. Best I got for my usual coping mechanisms.

Modern, Cool Nerd

69 % Nerd, 52% Geek, 43% Dork
For The Record:
A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored better than half in Nerd and Geek, earning you the title of: Modern, Cool Nerd.

Nerds didn't use to be cool, but in the 90's that all changed. It used to be that, if you were a computer expert, you had to wear plaid or a pocket protector or suspenders or something that announced to the world that you couldn't quite fit in. Not anymore. Now, the intelligent and geeky have eked out for themselves a modicum of respect at the very least, and "geek is chic." The Modern, Cool Nerd is intelligent, knowledgable and always the person to call in a crisis (needing computer advice/an arcane bit of trivia knowledge). They are the one you want as your lifeline in Who Wants to Be a Millionaire (or the one up there, winning the million bucks)!

Congratulations!

WELCOME!

Skin isn't exactly what I want yet, things may be buggy for a few days, but at least the move is complete.

Please make sure you check your blog ASAP to make sure skins/images/whatnot made it over.

There's an issue with updating your blog settings that I've ran into, and I'm not quite sure how to fix it.

Bandaid: Clear out the "Update file" field. Now that I say this, I'm not sure non-admins see it, but I'll have to confer with Zejan tomorrow.

Otherwise...get comfy. We'll be here for awhile.  :)
