2008

Ordinarily, I'm one of those people who likes the rain. Rather, I enjoy what normal people would term a "dreary day". Overcast, hardly any sun to come through, and a-fixin' ta rain any minute. My kinda day.

Today however, it feels oppressive; it feels like my mood.

We have to go back to the house today. I'm driving FIL's truck so I can go straight from work to meet Wifey there. Don't know how much before that she's going to be there, but I could hope that she'll be there long enough to have a bunch of stuff spotted upstairs. Just the anticipation of the visit is wearing on me, and I haven't even gone into the house.

As sun is breaking through the clouds now, it reminds me to put in the small ray of sunshine in life.

I called the water softener guy to see about setting up for the move now that things are all official like. He's apparently been trying to find my number, because he was looking to do the move Thursday/Friday...or sooner. By the end of the phone call I told him about us being at the house, and he said he'd like to come by and see what there needs to move it all.

There is a HIGH possibility he'd move it tonight. True, he checked with the sales guy, and no, we don't have lifetime free moves. However...we might just have tasty water by morning!

To get rid of some stuff, Wifey and our former neighbor (the one who was buying some of the furniture) were going to have a garage sale this summer at some point. I was dwelling on that a bit on the ride in, and I resolved myself not to help. Thinking of it now, I just can't possibly fathom going there and seeing "our house" right next door and seeing whatever they've done to it -- good, bad, or just different. It's going to be too much. Wifey will have to be on her own for that.

It's just passed 8:30am, and I've just had to pop two Advil. This is in addition to the two Aleve I took with my morning meds because my shoulders are still slightly sore from the weekend moves. The caffeine isn't doing jack for me this morning either.

I would really like to just find a bed to crawl in at this point, close the room-darkening curtains, and sleep for about two days.

Forget burnout, boreout is the new office disease

Is it you?
If you say “yes” to four or more of these, you could have boreout . . .
  1. Do you complete private tasks at work?
  2. Do you feel underchallenged or bored?
  3. Do you sometimes pretend to be busy?
  4. Are you tired and apathetic after work even though you experienced no stress in the office?
  5. Are you unhappy with your work?
  6. Do you find your work meaningless?
  7. Could you complete your work quicker than you are doing?
  8. Are you afraid of changing your job because you might take a salary cut?
  9. Do you send private e-mails to colleagues during working hours?
  10. Do you have little or no interest in your work?

It's sad, but it's safe to say that every one of those ten is spot-on.

Sunday morning on the trip we got breakfast at Waffle House. Never been there before. Got the slathered, smothered, whateverelsered hashbrowns. ZOMG

The rest of the day was the longest leg of the trip. Lexington, KY to Knoxville, TN to pick up I-40 through the mountains. For lunch, we stopped in Ashville, NC for a very tasty bite to eat at a local mall-based restaurant (FIL has a taste for gourmet burgers).

While Wifey and MIL wandered the mall a bit to stretch legs, and try to find a play area for the kids, FIL and I went to gas-up. On our return, I popped into the local Waldenbooks, and bought a copy of C.S. Lewis's Mere Christianity. I had been reading Ender's Game so far on the trip (FIL was driving), and was making very quick progress through it. I knew I'd need something else in very short time.

We ended up reaching our target of the far side of Columbia, SC just before nightfall. We stayed at a Hampton Inn, and it was a pretty nice place. For the kids, while it was late for bedtime, but we let them go out and swim in the pool for a bit before bed.
