Introduction
Hello! Welcome to the Dance Compendium.
Here you will find a complete list of all the in-game /dance commands. You will be able to view the origin and a video of the actual dance. For all players new and old I hope this will bring you some enjoyment to see the actual dances performed for you. Blizzard has done an amazing job with the plethora of type commands and it is a shame to not give them to attention they deserve. Please feel free the use any of these links for your own purposes, and most importantly, ENJOY!
HORDE
Trolls
Male
Origin / Reference:: The male troll dance is not a "Toprock" or and "Uprock" at all. It is infact a dance known as Capoeira. Capoeira is a Brazilian martial art developed initially by African slaves in Brazil, starting in the colonial period. It is marked by deft, tricky movements often played on the ground or completely inverted. It also has a strong acrobatic component in some versions and is always played with music. Female
Origin / Reference:: This dance move is known as the "washing machine". Where Blizzard got this idea from is unknown. In the popular movie, Selena, starring Jennifer Lopez, her mother teaches her how to do the "washing machine". Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vr0ddZ8cesME
Orcs
Male
Origin / Reference:: This dance is performed by the great MC Hammer. The specific dance is used in his music video "U Can't Touch This". Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vYpt6A-5tG0I
Female
Origin / Reference:: The dance the orc =====Female=====s perform is by all research not derived from any celebrity or popular dance move. The move itself is a dance that can easily be seen at any Night Club. Though specific origin might not be known, Hispanics and Blacks are seen performing atleast part of this routine at most Clubs. Tauren
Male
Origin / Reference:: Tauren male dances have been changed over the course of a few patches. In the beginning Tauren males performed "Peanut Butter Jelly Time", which was an internet craze for a short lived moment in time. Now, Tauren males still do the "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" but, have the short "Raise the Roof" and "Sidewalk" mixed in as well. Female
Origin / Reference:: Known by many as the "Electric Slide", this dance is a country line dance move. The dance is however not a cool one and is usually performed at wedding, senior dances, or school functions. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vHs30XpTJ32w
Undead
Male
Origin / Reference:: The male undead dance is not much of a dance at all. It is really a rocker move called the "Headbang", also, there is a bit of "Air Guitar" in the routine as well. "Headbanging" is just simply flailing around in a disorderly fashion, while "Air Guitar" is playing the guitar with no actualy guitar. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vXe3qA1gaWHA&moderelated&search ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?vULxzbH-mX10
Female
Origin / Reference:: This dance is a off-shoot of the "Belly Dance" which is the art of complete control of ones abdominal region. The specific style of "Belly Dance" that is used in World of Warcraft is the "Trance". The "Trance" is much slower and seductive style of the "Belly Dance" Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vTuhX-X0WDn8
Blood Elves
Male
Origin / Reference:: This dance routine comes from the movie Napoleon Dynamite. This dance is done by Napoleon at the very end of the movie at the school talent show. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vjY98yg2_ze4
Female
''Origin / Reference:: N/A Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vIEyWQlGcfLI
ALLIANCE
Human
Male
Origin / Reference:: The human dance's origin is from the movie Saturday Night Fever starring John Travolta. This dance was performed during the disco era which was extremely popular during the 70s. The most famous move is the "Point" which is when one hand is placed on the hips and the other doing a point towards the sky. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vceRKFzLk92g&moderelated&search
Female
Origin / Reference:: Probably the only /dance that makes more of a statement then a dance is the human =====Female====='s. Their dance has only one real move, "The Macarena", which was a very big fad in the late 90s. Other than that one move, the human =====Female====='s just prance around. Basically, it is Blizzard's ode to the saying "White people have no rythym". Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vcNsb4zP76gE
Dwarf
Male
Origin / Reference:: The Dwarf dance is difficult to nail to one specific group. While it looks like a "River Dance", a popular Irish folk dance, it might also be a Traditional Russian Folk Dance. I am going to assume that it is the latter. The dwarf dance most emulates the dance performed by the group "Dschinghis Khan". Also another source of this dance could be drawn from the musical Fiddler on the Roof, in which there is a scene where the Jews and Gentiles dance together which looks like the Dwarf dance. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vD43yn6g6pb4 ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?vck1Daz9VNXs ; http://www.youtube.com/watch?vdTFEPiVcnV8&moderelated&search
Female
Origin / Reference:: Unlike the male counterpart, the dwarf =====Female===== dance is a "River Dance" which is a combination of tap dance and line dancing. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vdTFEPiVcnV8&moderelated&search
Night Elf
Male
Origin / Reference:: Night Elf males perform an excerpt of Michael Jackson's dance. The spin, trademark hip pump, and the hat pull down are all popular moves of the legendary Michael Jackson. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vc8aWc_4IVx0
Female
Origin / Reference:: Contrary to popular belief the Night Elf =====Female===== dance is not a Pole-Dance, nor is it a Strip routine. It is in fact derived from a French singer named Alizee. The similarity to a Pole-Dance however is uncanny. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v5XaCftDrYds&moderelated&search
Gnome
Male
Origin / Reference:: The male gnome dance is similar to the orc =====Female===== dance in origin. It is more of a Club dance maneuver. The gnome's dance simply stays in a Club rocking position. Video: N/A
Female
Origin / Reference:: Again, from all research the gnome =====Female===== dance is nothing more than an inspired club dance. Video: N/A
Draenei
Male
Origin / Reference:: The Draenei males do a dance that is performed by Daler Mehndi. The name of the music video is Tunak Tunak Tun. Video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?vKepPoUEm7SI
Female
Origin / Reference:: N/A Video: N/A
Conclusion
Thank you all for your time and I hope you enjoyed an in-depth look at the Dances of World of Warcraft. As this is still far from complete, please feel free to give advice, better example videos, or tell me if I am just completely wrong on a specific character. Whatever you decide to do make it constructive and please give me feedback on if it was helpful or if you enjoyed it! - Kronogor
